Want to do your part to help save the lives of innocent, abandoned dogs & cats? Looking for an avenue to be part of something bigger than yourself?  Would you like to make friends with people who have the same passion for animals as you do?  Once accepted as a foster or volunteer for 2nd Chance you become a part of our family and we truly do believe WE ARE family!!!!

What is a Foster?

Fosters and other volunteers are the backbone of our organization.  Because we are not a "shelter," our dogs live with real human families instead of being kept on cement floors with wire kennels and no furry friend or human to cuddle up to.  They live full lives as beloved members of a foster family before they are sent off to their forever homes.

We Need Fosters!

2nd Chance 4 Life Rescue is dependent upon its fosters. They are the "hub" of our organization. We appreciate EVERYTHING they do. Our fosters open their hearts and their homes to dogs that, without them, may be living on "borrowed time." The dogs seem to know that they were saved and appreciate their foster families. People tend to think that shelter dogs must be "problem dogs," on the contrary, many were just unlucky and ended up with owners that felt they were dispensable. So for all the love and loyalty they gave, their owners still dumped them at the local kill shelter when they became inconvenient for whatever reason. Other owners failed to plan for their loyal pet in case of their death and so the owner's family dropped the dog off at the kill shelter.

Usually our foster dogs are wonderful little creatures, starving for love and attention and yes, sometimes food! If you would consider opening your heart and home to an innocent dog who did nothing wrong other than end up at the shelter, PLEASE fill out a foster application and we will be in touch. I guarantee your family will be blessed by the wonderful dogs and people they meet through becoming a foster. And parents, don't worry about your children not understanding the fostering concept, children get it!  It is the adults that have a much harder time with it. Remember that for every dog adopted, 2 dogs have been saved (the one you take in your home and the one who now has a kennel at the shelter because we made room). It makes the process much easier and so rewarding! We look forward to meeting you and having your family as a part of our foster family network!

Fosters love and take care of their foster dog as if it was part of their family - feeding, grooming, playing, taking to the vet, and more.  Foster choose their dogs the rescue would never consider just showing up with a dog and saying "here you go"  Fosters are given high kill shelter sites to choose from.  The rescue is also constantly being called to help with local surrenders so emails are sent out with local needs and photo's of the dog in need and a foster can choose to help that dog or wait for another.  While a foster family is taking care of a 2nd Chance dog, the rescue takes care of medical care with our wonderful vet team, we also take care of providing food thanks to Purina! and we supply a crate and all the training a foster would like.  Fosters also take an active role in helping their dogs to be adopted - bringing them to adoption events, fielding adoption applications, and ultimately selecting the perfect family.  Fosters have the ultimate say in where their foster dogs go as long as they follow policy.

Following criteria must be met.

1.  Must own your own home

2.  May Not use an invisible/electric fence

3.  May not have children living in the home under 5 years of age.

4.  Must be willing to bring your foster dog to events

5.  All present dogs in the home MUST be spay/neutered

What is a volunteer?
Because we are non-profit, all of our work is done by volunteers - fundraising, advertising, web site management, mailings, committees, doggy sitting and more.  Without the selfless donations of time and energy provided by our volunteers, 2nd Chance would never have been able to place so many dogs in loving homes.  There are always volunteer roles to be filled within our organization, and if you decide to foster or adopt later, being an on-record volunteer provides a fast track through that application process.
Volunteers at the Rescue Ranch Sanctuary located at 737 Taylor Rd., Windsor, PA  17366 are especially needed.  The volunteers at the ranch help with breakfast, steam floors, help with wash, scoop litter boxes, vaccuum, bathe dogs, oversee play yards, scoop poop all while interacting with the fur buddies NONE of which are kept in kennels or cages.  They have free reign of the ranch!  It is a slice of heaven on earth :)

How do I become a volunteer?
Fosters and volunteers are selected from a pool of applicants.  We consider your employment and housing situations, and perform a background check on all persons in your home over the age of 18.  We place the success of our entire rescue endeavor in the hands of our fosters and volunteers every day, so we want to be sure that any new helpers will have the same passion and commitment that we do.
