2nd Chance 4 Life Rescue is primarily a sanctuary for senior and medically needy dogs.  Every once in awhile you will see younger dogs but for the most part our dogs live out their life at the ranch at the request of their previous owners or their owners families.  We have many sponsorship dogs.  Our sponsors love to keep in touch and know how their sponsored fur buddy is doing :)
When we have foster families we are thrilled to be able to take adoptable younger dogs :)  So if you have ever thought about becoming fosters please feel free to go to our foster/volunteer page and fill out an application.
The Ranch located at 737 Taylor Rd., Windsor, PA is always looking for dedicated volunteers that will commit to at least a 2 hour shift per week at the rescue.  Volunteers work in play yards, help with laundry and feeding.  Some enjoy landscaping or carpentry projects and some like to bake for the healing center visitors :)
Thank you for supporting our mission of caring for the elderly and medically needy souls that need us!

Hello my name is Bella and I was given back to 2nd Chance after almost a year :(  I am very confused and sitting in boarding since there is no open foster homes :(
I would prefer to be an only dog although I have been with dogs bigger than me.  Smaller sized & passive dogs I try to bully :(
I really do not prefer kids.  My last home had a 5 year old that just wouldn't stop hugging me and I didn't like it so I would like a home with a larged fenced yard and a couple without children who want to take me on long walks and give me plenty of jobs and exercise.  After all I am a hound and anyone that knows the breed knows we are very smart and stubborn.
2nd Chance says I need someone who will be the pack leader and not allow me to get "to big for my pants"  I'm not sure what that means but I think it means I don't get to be bossy :)

2/7/15 Update - Bella continues to be in boarding.  She is being well taken care of but really needs a home to call her own where she can get the daily exercise she needs.  She loves to run and explore all the smells outside.  We are still working on her leash skills but once her initial energy is out, she responds well to commands.  She also does well on car rides.

Bella can be stubborn at times but what strong, independent girl isn't a little stubborn sometimes:)  She needs a confident person who can respect her space and accept her loving kisses once trust is built.

3/22/15 Update - We were hoping by the spring that Bella would be in her forever home but she is still in boarding.  I've been spending time with her twice a week which she enjoys but really needs daily exercise.  She's been doing amazingly better on our walks.  We usually jog for the first couple of blocks to get her initial energy out and then she responds better to leash corrections and commands.  Of course, since she's a hound, she has to smell everything so we try to allow her to be a dog but also not let her take charge of our walks :)  Someone who can give Bella daily exercise, patience, and a routine will have a pup who is a devoted companion.

6/11/15 Update - I've been working with Bella twice a week for the past 6 months.  She is doing so much better but really needs to get out of boarding!  We've taken her to several events and she has done well once her initial excitement or nervousness has passed.  She walks SO much better on her leash although she stills pulls alot at times & often wants to run the first couple of blocks.   Which I am happy to do with her.  I really think once she is on a home where she can run & romp a few times a day, her rambunctious will subside :)  She definitely needs someone who is the "alpha" because as a hound she can be a bit stubborn at times.  She is turning into a fun, relaxed pup but still needs trust built with strangers before she's fully comfortable.  Kids still make her anxious.  Bella would LOVE a person who will be active with her, has a fenced in yard, and will respect her independent nature at times.  Oh yeah, she also loves car rides!

12/29/15 Update - Bella has been out of boarding and in a foster home for 6 months now.  She gets out daily for exercise which has made a world of difference!  She walks so much better on her leash and listens to commands very well.  Squirrels, chipmunks, butterflies...basically anything that flutters around...grabs her attention quickly though, so she needs someone who is very attentive on walks and has quick reflexes :)   As active as she is, she also enjoys being lazy on the couch or just watching nature outside the picture window.  Bella's "person" should be active, be able to set-up a routine with her, and be ready to share the covers...she's a bit of a bed hog ;)

Good with Dogs, Not Good with Cats, Is Not Good with Kids

Please fill out an adoption application:
Adoption application (Dog)
Adoption Application (Cat)

Please understand we do not adopt out dogs to families with children under the age of 5. We do not adopt dogs to renters. Some dogs will have fence requirements while others may not.

A pet is a lifetime commitment. The dogs and cats in our system find themselves there, for the most part, because their humans did not have the same loyalty to them as they did to their owners. We do not take the adoption process lightly, and will do everything in our power to make sure the animal is placed correctly the first time around for your sake and theirs. Thank you for choosing to adopt not shop!
